Special Education

‍Special Education Programs

‍SSS offers a wide variety of technologies and programming to assist your special needs student.  We offer in-class support, self-contained classes and resource room support for all special needs students.

‍Students with exceptionalities who are identified with the Rainbow District School Board will have their accommodations met through an Individual Education Plan.

‍The Special Education Department at SSS provides a variety of programs to meet the individual needs of students with a wide range of exceptionalities.

‍Special education classrooms are designed to provide a structured environment to meet the differentiated learning style of each individual student.

‍Our special education classrooms not only have interactive environments, but are also equipped with several computers with assistive technology.  Whether your student is familiar with assistive technologies or not, our staff will help train your student.

‍Resource Room

‍Our goal is to assist students in developing the skills, habits and positive attitudes necessary for success at the secondary school level and beyond.  We strive to provide an environment that is welcoming, accepting and flexible to meet the needs of our exceptional students.

‍Students who have an IEP may access the services and technology available in the Resource Room in order to achieve the greatest level of academic success.  Students who have a scheduled Resource period have access to technology, assistance with assignments, as well as organizational and time management skills on a daily basis.  Students who do not have a scheduled Resource period are encouraged to seek the services and technology available to them in the Resource Room as needed.  Students often choose to write their tests and exams in the Resource Room as many are entitled to accommodations such as additional time and the use of a computer.

‍ASD Programming

‍Students participating in the ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) Program at SSS have the opportunity to participate in programming both in the classroom and out in their community. Through a variety of hands-on, real-world learning experiences, students get to learn and practice valuable skills to support their future goals. This includes social skills, communication skills, money math, personal hygiene, cooking, and other essential independent living skills. Each student in the ASD classroom has an individualized program that supports their specific goals and needs. Students are given opportunities to navigate scenarios to prepare themselves for real world experiences. This is achieved through involvement in SSS's Snack Program, Breakfast Program, and Value Vault. In addition, students in this program have the opportunity to attend a variety of social events and activities throughout the school year including: Dances, Bowling, Beach Volleyball, Challenge Meet, Plays, Movies, and Bocce, to name a few.

‍Life Skills

‍Students enrolled in our Life Skills Program participate in a variety of hands-on learning experiences such as Breakfast Club, Snack Program, The Value Vault, and Gardening. Students have the opportunity to attend a variety of social activities throughout the school year including: Silver City Movies, Beach Ball Volleyball Tournament, Halloween Dance, Christmas Lunch/Dance, T-Ball Tournament, Track and Field Meet, Bowling, and Special Olympics sports events to name a few.

‍Our Special Education Department has invested considerably in new technologies and learning programs that are beneficial to the learning styles of our Life Skills learners.

‍Inclusion Program

‍Sudbury Secondary School offers an Inclusion Program for students with more severe learning issues who are still hoping to earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. These students may have learning needs that include but are not limited to: Mild Intellectual Disability, Autismor a combination of a Learning Disability and other physical or learning needs. Students in this program are in credit-bearing courses and are supported by two educational assistants and an Inclusion teacher. The Inclusion teacher and EA's work closely with the Classroom teachers to ensure that course programming is properly modified and accommodated in order to help these students to be successful and earn credits towards their diploma.

‍Day Treatment

‍The Day Treatment program at Sudbury Secondary School is a partnership between the Rainbow District School Board and COMPASS, a community-based children’s mental health agency.

‍Day Treatment blends an educational and treatment component for students whose education is being impacted due to their mental health needs. Day Treatment is considered an intensive mental health service. Regular attendance is necessary in order to maximize the effectiveness of the program.

‍In an effort to create a holistic and balanced approach to education and mental health, the students work on a number of benchmarks including job readiness skills, Indigenous support and gardening. The students run the Northstar Cafe for the staff in addition to organizing and stocking the Value Vault, the food bank and used clothing shop located at Sudbury Secondary School. The students meet monthly to smudge and discuss topics with the Indigenous Support Worker. The students also work on gardening in conjunction with a partnership with the Learning Sustainability grant. As Sigmund Freud once said “Flowers are restful to look at. They have no emotions or conflict.” Students who are overwhelmed often find solace in gardening and the students work with a local community garden in New Sudbury every spring to hone their skills.

‍In order to qualify for Day Treatment, students should reach out to the Principal of Special Education programming to determine eligibility for the intake process. There are only two such programs in the school board. The other program is located in Espanola. Students are enrolled in the credits necessary for their graduation both in the Day Treatment classroom and in an integrated setting.
